Hughes Family

Within every family in America there lies a story or a hero who gave their all defending what we have and hold dear.  This is one of our family stories.

Meet my Grandfather Richard Hughes, Uncle Frank 'Bud' Hughes and 'Gram' Mayme Hughes.

Uncle Bud participated in the European theatre during WWII.  During the course of his deployment he was among those who witnessed the aftermath at Dachau prison encampment.  He did not speak much about the war at all but while I was in college I was staying with him and my cousin for a basketball tournament.  While I was there - he watched a couple documentaries on  WWII.  He didn't share any information with me directly, but as I sat on the couch he did correct the narrator as to what equipment was shown and used during the war.  That in itself was more than we ever expected him to share.

  1.
  2. A Moment In Time
  3.
  4. Christmas
  5. One long ago day
  6. Bullets flying
  7. Amid the snow
  8.
  9. Came all of a sudden
  10. And quietly stole over the land
  11. Then one by one
  12. Silent Night was sung
  13.
  14. Russian, French
  15. English
  16. Language barriers existed
  17. Yet did not change the meaning
  18. Nor the intent
  19.
  20. A few glorious hours
  21. Honor among men
  22. Ruling the day
  23. If only peace could stay
  24.
  25. Each man gathered his gear
  26. As the day drew to a close
  27. Wished another good cheer
  28. And went back to his post
  29.
  30. To this day
  31. A moment in history it became
  32. A fierce World War waged on
  33. Yet hesitated in the Lord’s Name
  34.
  35. Though but for a moment in time
  36. Did the war take a break
  37. Through the hands of great warriors
  38. Did honor and peace take
  39.
  40.

  44.
  45. I only hope that the men and women fighting for us today have the opportunity to experience what the men of World War I provided for our history.  May a moment's peace be found for you all!
  46. Kath
